Our Trip to Cornwall
Andy and I had our final holiday of 2024. We have been really blessed to have explored so many beautiful places in the UK this year, but Cornwall was definitely the highlight. It was my first time visiting Cornwall and Andy hasn't been since he was a child, it was amazing being able to create some new memories together. Here's what our trip looked like:
Day 1: Swindon - Port Isaac - St Ives
We started Day 1 leaving Andy's parents house in Swindon and drove down to Port Isaac where they filmed Doc Martin. We enjoyed exploring the familiar sites, had a very expensive coffee and then continued driving to St Ives where we were staying. we stayed in a beautiful Air BnB overlooking the St Ives Harbour.
Day 2: Exploring St Ives
We started our day relaxing on our balcony enjoying some bread from the local bakery. We then explored the harbour, shops and local beaches. We enjoyed a very tasty lunch at Porthmeor Beach Cafe, we would highly recommend this restaurant. We then explored Man's Head and went for a walk along the coast. We spent our evening relaxing at the Air BnB watching Doc Martin!
On day 3 we took a drive to the coast and explored Kynance Cove. This place was incredible, it reminded me of the filming locations in Poldark and Narnia, although I don't think either were filmed there. We enjoyed our cake and coffee looking out at sea surrounded by fellow tourists and we also got to explore some beautiful caves. When we returned home we had a free two hours before our evening meal, so we decided to go for a dip in the St Ives Harbour, it was very cold! We then enjoyed a delicious meal at the Mermaid, a wonderful seafood restaurant.
Day 4: Lands End
We had a relaxed morning (enjoying our balcony) and then drove to Sennen Cove. We then walked the coastal path (around 30 minutes) to Lands End. We were both surprised that Lands End had its own little village, the food was very expensive and didn't look that tasty though, so if you go there for a visit do we what we did, get some delicious bread from the bakery and make your own sandwiches! Even though we both enjoyed Lands End, it felt like we were ticking something of the bucket list rather than going somewhere we really enjoyed. The coastal walk was beautiful though, so parking in Sennen Cove is a must.
We wanted to make the most of our final day. We parked up at the local Tesco Superstore (free parking was rare to find) and walked to Steeple Nature Reserve. We had a lovely view to Cabris Bay beach, which is a village next to St Ives where it appears a lot of the locals live who work in St Ives. We then drove north to Godrevy Beach, we were impressed with how large this beach was, we felt like we were walking for miles. You can see seals depending on the time of year, sadly we didn't see any. We stopped off at a little cafe for cake and then headed back to the car park to start our journey up north to Swindon.
We had a wonderful time in Cornwall, even if it did take hours and hours to get there! If you visit Cornwall we would recommend the following:
- Visit St Ives, even if just for one day. It is a beautiful town full of live and beauty. We would say be careful where you book accommodation, we were a little too close to the hustle and bustle, which some people love, we personally prefer the quiet and peaceful vibe.
- Visit Kynance Cove, this is a must! You can't miss this incredible place, there were people surfing, swimming, taking their dogs for a walk and hikers like ourselves exploring the cove. Even if you're not into hiking there are routes you can walk to enjoy the view without having to do any long walks.
- Try the local produce. The bakery was incredible and the seafood was so fresh. Porthmeor Beach Cafe in St Ives was lovely, slightly pricey, but we only treated ourselves to two meals out, so we splurged a little.
- Do something adventurous. Andy and I didn't realise there would be people surfing and lessons available. We did go out of the tourist season so some activities weren't available. Our adventurous moments were the coastal hikes and having a dip in St Ives Bay when it was around 14c.
I hope you enjoyed this blog. This was our last holiday of 2024, hopefully next year I'll get to share our holidays abroad!
