Our Honeymoon in Madeira
Our honeymoon was absolutely incredible! Not only were Andy and I married, but it was our first time abroad after COVID. We flew into Funchal in January 2023 and stayed in an all inclusive hotel for 10 days.
Where we stayed: click here to view.
We chose Funchal as we wanted to visit somewhere with sunny weather, the highest temperature we experienced was 23 degrees Celsius, which was beautiful as we were mid winter back home in England.
This was the view from our hotel room, we had a lovely upgrade with a sea view. We spent many days relaxing, as planning a wedding is very stressful and hard work. I would recommend newly married couples go on a long honeymoon a day or two after their wedding day so you can relax after a busy stressful season of wedding planning.
One of my favourite things about travel is you get to explore a new culture, we visited the local food markets, tried the local cuisine and explored the back streets of Funchal. We went on a number of excursions and got to see places we would have never discovered ourselves. One of my favourite places was called 'Nun's Valley', it is a small village in a crater of a volcano. The nuns used to hide in the crater when the pirates were attacking Funchal. One piece of advice: if you are scared of heights it is probably not a good place to visit.

One of our favourite walks was in D'Abra Bay on the east coast of Madeira. We visited when we joined an east coast tour and loved it so much we got the 1 hour bus journey the following day to fully explore this incredible place. Here are some pictures, if you visit Madeira you have to visit D'Abra Bay.
On the bus journey back from D'Abra Bay looking slightly red faced!
Why we would recommend Madeira:
1. It's a small island so you can see most of the island within a week or two
2. It's a great escape in the winter months
3. The food is delicious and very fresh and healthy
4. As Madeira does attract tourists the hotel staff all speak fluent English
5. It's affordable, we paid less than £1500 between us for 10 nights in an all inclusive lovely hotel
6. It's brilliant for nature lovers and hikers
7. Our flight was less than 5 hours, so it's a very accessible holiday destination for people in England
I hope you enjoyed looking at some of the photos from our incredible honeymoon. Here are some additional photos.
