Saying goodbye to our first home

By the time you're reading this blog Andy and I would have hopefully moved into our new home, which means we're saying goodbye to our first home we shared. As excited as I am to move house, I also feel sadness in saying goodbye to our first home as a married couple. I want to share with you some of the journeys we've been on in this home and some lessons we've learnt from our first home we shared.

Here is a trip down memory lane:

Finally having a bedroom that was plain and simple, after spending several months in a room with pink flowery wall paper and red curtains!

Our first Christmas as a married couple, doing our best to make things look cozy with a cheap tree, as we had just spent thousands fixing our roof and buying a car!

Trying to renovate the spare room by ourselves, we eventually gave in and paid for a professional to do the job. Dust and asthma are not a good combination!

Our spare room after the professional did a job in 4 days we'd been trying for 4 months!

The gorgeous cat we had for 3 months that made us realise we need a cat when we move! He honestly made our house a home. We miss him very much.

Doing our best to create a relaxing area in our garden - I'd say we were 60% there. We need some lessons on gardening!

As you can see we created some fun memories in our first home together and we're both excited to create more memories in the next home. I want to share some lessons we've learnt after living in our first home together.

Lesson 1 - Be thankful for what you have

If I'm being truly honest Andy and I have complained a lot about our first home, it's cost us more money than we expected it would and that has been frustrating. However we have been so blessed to have a home to live in together in our early stages of marriage, plus the mortgage was cheap so it meant we could save for our new home together. It's taught me to look for the silver lining and to be thankful for what God has blessed you with in the season you are in.

Lesson 2 - Anything that's worth something requires work

As you can see from the pictures we've put a lot of work into our home, or at least tried too! We've done our best with the skills we have to look after our home, as it is an investment and an asset that is ours to maintain. Previously when we both rented we cared less about the homes as they weren't ours and if something went wrong it was someone else's job to fix the problem. However when you move into your own home it hits you that there is a responsibility. It taught us both that anything worth something does require a lot of work, and owning a home is amazing, but it is hard work.

Lesson 3 - Minimalism is important

Andy and I decided that we didn't want to splurge on expensive things for the house, because we knew we wouldn't be living there for that long. We did most of our shopping either at charity shops or getting things when they were on sale. In the early stages this was a financial decision as we didn't have much money, but it later became a lifestyle we wanted to adopt. We have decided in the new house to source second hand furniture or to save up and buy things when they are on sale. We want our home to feel simple and peaceful, we have also lived in a two bed house, so we didn't really have room to buy things even if we wanted them, as this would have led to clutter. Without meaning to we have become minimalists in the way we furnish our home.

Lesson 4 - There is a season for everything

The final lesson I want to share, which in my opinion is the most important, is that there is a season for everything. I'd be lying if I said every moment in this house has felt peaceful. Andy and I knew this would be a temporary home, but we also knew we couldn't move until it was the right time. I had to remind myself that we were in this house as a couple for a reason, and we're moving into our new home for another reason, for a different purpose. You might be in a place you don't want to be in right now, but that doesn't mean it's your forever.

I hope you enjoyed this blog and I will definitely be sharing a blog about our house move and sharing all the exciting details with you!
