How to find your purpose

We all want a purpose in life, we want to wake up for something, have energy to succeed at it and to rest our heads at night knowing we accomplished something. What a lot of people want to know is what that something is, what is your purpose in life? To quote Winston Churchill "It's not enough to have lived. We should be determined to live for something".

I want to walk you through a series of steps which I hope will help you discern your purpose. I will be sharing some personal examples and several Bible verses and quotes for inspiration.

Step #1 - The Ultimate Purpose

In Ephesians 2:10 it says 'For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do'. If our purpose doesn't line up with scripture or it's not producing good works then we have to ask ourselves, are we fulfilling our ultimate purpose in life? Everything we do is to honour God, so we need to continually be seeking prayer and wisdom. This is a great place to start, simply pray that God would open your eyes to see your unique purpose in life.

Step #2 - Passion & Excitement

Bishop T.D Jakes says "If you can't figure out your purpose, figure out your passion. For your passion will lead you right into your purpose". If you're going to spend your life working towards something you need to have the passion and excitement for it. We shouldn't be seeking our purpose with a mindset of money or success, but with a mindset of passion. Pause for a few minutes and think to yourself 'what am I passionate about?'. A simple way I learnt my passion/purpose is by thinking 'what excites me?', I was falling asleep last night thinking about this blog and the other content I'm hoping to create in the future and I was visibly smiling. It's what allows me to spend my evenings and weekends working on this blog, because I find excitement in it.

Step #3 - Does it line up with other areas of my life?

Lets be realistic for a few moments, if I thought my purpose was to go on mission trips to Africa for months at a time, would that be realistic when I have a job and a husband in England? Would that be realistic when we have children? I'm not saying a mission trip to Africa is a bad purpose, but it's not my purpose as it doesn't line up with other areas of my life God has already set in motion. You need to make sure that you're not making up purposes that are an escape from your current life, but a purpose which lines up with God's current calling on your life, whether that's being a spouse, a parent etc.

Step #4 - Find purpose in the every day moments

Remove the pressure from feeling that life only begins once you find your purpose. Your purpose at 25 might be different at 65, it's an ongoing journey. Even though I do believe that every person has certain gifts from God that propels them into their purpose, I also believe that God wants us to seek purpose in our every day mundane lives. If you're picking your kids up from school, it's your purpose in that moment to be a loving parent who asks about their child's day at school. If you're meeting a friend for coffee, it's your purpose to be a present loving friend. You don't always need to be seeking out this extraordinary purpose. Purpose often will find you in time, but in the meantime find purpose and joy in the every day moments of life.
